Inspiring Woman Series

Isabel Allende Llona (born 2 August 1942 in Lima, Peru) is a Chilean-American writer and journalist. Her works have been translated into 27 different languages. Over 51 million copies have been sold. Together with other women's rights activists, she founded the magazine Paula, which was the only feminist magazine in Chile at the time. She wrote theatre plays and taught literature at various universities. Through her journalistic work, she campaigned above all for the emancipation of women and gender equality and became known as a socially critical and feminist author.

In her novels, Allende impressively conveys the culture, history and suffering of her home country. Her own biography - especially that of her family - plays a major role in many of her works. She claims to speak for those who were condemned to silence under the Pinochet regime in Chile, for example.
